In Chapter 4 of Influencer, the author describes the first of 6 steps in influencing behavior – making the undesirable desirable. It is a focus on intrinsic motivation. The author provides several compelling stories and insights. As business people, we run the risk of saying “but that was a different scenario; I can’t apply that at work.” That would be false – the scenarios addressed are more complicated and more difficult than what we do at work. Think of a situation at work you want to influence a behavior change in (e.g. a problem employee, a major change initiative, etc.). Describe for others how you can change behavior making the “undesirable desirable” through intrinsic motivation.

Influencer Discussion Topic #2: How do we change behavior and change minds?
Chapters 2 and 3 of Influencer boils down a wealth of research and practice on change down to the most potent nuggets of value. The authors show that to affect real change you have to identify and change vital behaviors (chapter 2). Then, the authors show address how to change how we try to change minds in order to get people to adopt the new vital behaviors (chapter 3).
Two common problems we face in business are: (1) implementing new changes (e.g. new systems and processes) and getting people to adopt them and (2) getting people to improve performance.
Chapters 2 and 3 provide great assistance in addressing these 2 problems. For this discussion, I want to hear from you what you draw from these chapters in regards to these 2 common problems.
Note: I hear from many via e-mail. I hope you will “join the discussion” and comment on this topic.
